Jill Baroff
Jill Baroff’s practice is grounded in drawing, but it continually tests where drawing meets data, geography, light and form. Her Tide Drawings begin with empirical records of water levels at specific locations and times, which she translates into grids, concentric circles and linear sequences. Drawn by hand on Japanese gampi, these works trace the cyclical ebb and flow of tides while also registering the disruptions of hurricanes, storm surges and other atypical weather patterns. At once precise and deeply atmospheric, they make visible the patterns through which time moves in nature.
Tides and Hudson River drawings reflect Baroff’s upbringing near New York Harbour and her long engagement with the waterways around New York. The material presence of gampi also points to her time in Kyoto and her sustained dialogue with Japanese architecture, paper and light. Throughout the work, raw information becomes something more than notation: a sensuous structure shaped by hand, process and attention.
In other bodies of work, Baroff allows geometry to become more unstable and self-generating. By painting borders on paper, cutting them away and reintroducing the sheet to water, she creates forms that fold, float and reorganise themselves through a balance of chance and order. More recently, she has extended this language into wood reliefs and wall works, translating the logic of earlier drawings into sculptural space. Here, a bolder palette and shifting play of light heighten the architectural clarity and visual energy of the work, while retaining the same interest in how forms structure themselves and shape the space around them.
