Should I Stay or Should I Go?
_ —Should I Stay or Should I Go? was a group exhibition by Bartha Contemporary and Patrick Heide Contemporary Art, held at Patrick Heide's gallery, 11 Church Street, London NW8, from 28 February to 13 April 2019. It was the first collaboration between the two galleries. The exhibition took up questions raised by the UK's decision to leave the European Union: inclusion and exclusion, migration and memory, home and belonging. The works approached the subject through metaphor rather than political comment.
Fifteen artists took part: Jill Baroff, Sophie Bouvier Ausländer, James Scott Brooks, David Connearn, Eric Cruikshank, Henrik Eiben, Frank Gerritz, Michał Iwanowski, Michael Landy, Stefana McClure, Mike Meiré, Danica Phelps, Varvara Shavrova, Susan Stockwell and Johannes von Stumm.
Iwanowski showed Go Home, Polish, made on a walk from Bristol to his native Poland. David Connearn's Calais Flags and Danica Phelps's Gratitude Project both began with images of the refugee crisis. Bouvier Ausländer and Cruikshank reworked maps and places, and Susan Stockwell's Jerusalem-Br-Exit shows a map of the UK coming loose at its southern border. James Scott Brooks showed his Birthplace series. McClure and Meiré both started from print media and erased or defaced its content; Meiré's LA DERNIÈRE ROSE (2016) is lacquer paint on newspaper.
