Giulia Ricci
Born in Italy, 1976
Lives and works in London, UK
Giulia Ricci's finely detailed geometrical works use a variety of processes, hand-made and digital drawing, laser engraving, installation and video. Drawing underpins the artist’s practice across the various media. Drawing is a means of translating the experience of tactility into a visual image, as the artist creates a sense of texture through a non-representational visual language.
Biography
Giulia Ricci was born in Italy in 1976 and lives and works in London. She holds two undergraduate degrees from Bologna — a BA in Fine Art (Painting) from the Academy of Fine Art and a BA in Visual Arts and History of Art from the University of Bologna — followed by an MFA in Fine Art (Sculpture) from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Drawing underpins her practice across a range of media, including hand-made and digital drawing, laser engraving, installation, printmaking, and video. Her finely detailed geometrical works use a non-representational visual language to translate the experience of tactility into a visual image.
Ricci has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Duveen Travel Award from the Slade, a first prize in the Research Images As Art competition at UCL, and an AHRC Professional Preparation Master's Scheme grant. She has been shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize on four occasions (2010, 2011, 2015, and 2017) and for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize in 2018. Permanent public commissions include large-scale wall drawings for the Facebook London offices, The Crown Estate's Quadrant 2 development, the School of Mathematical Sciences at Queen Mary University, and a quilted wall hanging for the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, UCL. She has exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Drawing Room, and the Estorick Collection, London, among other venues, and has shown with Bartha Contemporary since 2012.
