In the HAIKU series, Beat Zoderer translates the concision and structural clarity of Japanese haiku poetry into a refined painterly language. Each work is composed of three superimposed layers of acrylic paint, their translucent fields carefully aligned within irregular, shifting grids. The disciplined three-part structure is deliberate, echoing the haiku’s economy while allowing complexity to emerge through nuance rather than excess. Zoderer’s grids resist rigid order. Slight displacements, uneven intervals and subtle interruptions introduce a sense of movement and contingency, lending the works a quiet tension between control and openness. Colour plays a central role. Overlapping layers create delicate optical mixtures that oscillate between surface and depth, suggesting spatial rhythm without any figurative reference. Executed with the sensitivity of watercolour yet grounded in the logic of concrete art, these paintings invite slow, attentive viewing. They reward collectors drawn to works that combine conceptual rigour with perceptual richness and continue the European tradition of geometric abstraction while remaining fresh, intimate, and quietly poetic.
