Lucinda Burgess + Frank Gerritz
_ —Lucinda Burgess + Frank Gerritz was a two-person exhibition at Bartha Contemporary, 7 Ledbury Mews North, Notting Hill, London, from 20 October to 3 November 2021. The gallery conceived it as a tribute to the two artists' admiration for each other's work, with recent works that refer to their love of oriental culture, a minimal aesthetic and a close understanding of surfaces.
Gerritz, born in Hamburg in 1964, makes sculpture and drawing in mostly monochrome tones, using cast iron, oil paint-stick on anodised aluminium and pencil. His Kiyoshi (2017), paint-stick on anodised aluminium, 120 x 60 cm, was in the exhibition.
Burgess was born in London in 1962 and lives and works near Stroud. Her background in painting, landscape design and oriental philosophy led to an interest in the raw, elemental qualities of materials, and her sculpture stresses constant change over any fixed object or identity. She studied fine art at Bath Academy of Art and took an MFA at Bath School of Art and Design in 2014.
The exhibition overlapped with a show of works by Burgess and the Dutch painter José Heerkens at RaumX, 185 Queens Crescent, Kentish Town, from 22 October to 6 November 2021.
