Biography
Lucinda Burgess (born 1962, London) lives and works near Stroud, UK. She holds a BA Hons in Fine Art from Bath Academy of Art (1986), an Art Teachers' Post Graduate from Goldsmiths College, University of London (1987), and a Master of Fine Art from Bath School of Art and Design (2014). Her background in painting, landscape design and oriental philosophy has led to a fascination with the raw elemental qualities of materials, and informs a sculptural practice that accentuates the reality of constant change, undermining the idea of a fixed thing, object, entity or identity.
Burgess has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, with solo presentations at venues including Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall; Kunstverein Brühl, near Cologne; Kunstverein Eislingen, near Stuttgart; and Space of Time Gallery, Beijing. She has shown in group exhibitions at the Venice Biennale, the Jerwood Space in London, and the Mall Galleries in London, among others. Her work is held in the collection of the Beaux Arts Gallery, London. Public commissions include a large outdoor colour installation, *Floral Colour Spectrum*, for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (2002), and a large-scale public sculpture in the harbour of Porthleven, Cornwall (2017).
Recognition includes the Jerwood Drawing Prize (2017), the Porthleven Prize (2014), and Gold medals at Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court (2007). In 2025, she undertook a residency at the Albers Foundation in Ireland.
