Hadi Tabatabai was born in Mashhad, Iran, in 1964. He immigrated to the United States in 1977 with his family, settling in California. Tabatabai received a BS in industrial technology from California State University Fresno in 1985 and a BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1995. Tabatabai's work has been shown in London, Turin, Bonn, and widely in the United States. He has had solo exhibitions at the Anthony Grant Gallery in New York, Brian Gross Fine Art and Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco, and Inde/Jacobs in Marfa, Texas. His works are included in the collections of The Achenbach Foundation at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Delaware Art Museum, The Contemporary Museum (Honolulu, Hawaii), the Colby College Museum of Art (Waterville, Maine), The Lannan Foundation, The Progressive Corporation Art Collection, and the Werner H. Kramarsky Collection.
Biography
Hadi Tabatabai was born in Mashhad, Iran, in 1964 and lives and works in California. He received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from California State University, Fresno in 1985 and a Bachelor of Arts in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1995, completing his final semester at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
Tabatabai has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally, with solo exhibitions at venues including the Lannan Foundation, Santa Fe; Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh; Kunstgalerie Bonn; and Bartha Contemporary, London. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the Berkeley Art Museum, Parasol Unit, London, and the Katonah Museum of Art, among others.
His work is held in numerous public collections, including the Achenbach Foundation at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Berkeley Art Museum, the Delaware Art Museum, the Davis Museum at Wellesley College, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Colby College Museum of Art, the Balton Museum of Art at the University of Texas, Austin, the Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, and the Lannan Foundation. Awards include the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award (2008), residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts and the Kala Art Institute, and a finalist nomination for the SFMOMA SECA Award (2004).
