Beat Zoderer - Faltungen und andere Ereignisse
_ —Beat Zoderer: Faltungen und andere Ereignisse (Foldings and other events) was an exhibition of the Swiss artist's work at the Kunstmuseum Ahlen in Germany, from 20 June to 12 September 2021, presented as part of Hellweg-Konkret II. It surveyed some 30 years of Zoderer's work through the theme of folding, which has a central place in the history of Concrete Art. Folding takes his strict geometric vocabulary towards less rule-bound forms and off the flat surface into space. For the exhibition Zoderer made a new installation in the museum's large entrance room.
Zoderer was born in Zurich in 1955 and lives and works in Wettingen, Switzerland, and Genoa, Italy. He works mainly with everyday materials, among them adhesive labels, rubber bands, scraps of wood and foam, and uses them without altering them in structures that look methodical but leave room for chance. The museum described him as an artist who follows the rules of constructive and concrete art closely enough to undermine them with humour.
The museum edited a catalogue with texts by Ruth Diehl and Martina Padberg (Kettler Verlag, 2021). From 24 to 27 August 2021, pupils from art classes at the Fritz Winter Comprehensive School worked with the artist Frank Bölter on The Great Folding, a folded cardboard version of Ahlen's old town hall inspired by the exhibition.
