Biography

Stephan Baumkötter was born in Münster, Germany, in 1958 and lives and works in Cologne. He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Abt. Münster from 1980.

Baumkötter has exhibited widely across Europe, the United States, and Japan since the late 1980s. Solo exhibitions have been held at institutions and galleries including the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat, Bottrop; Kunstverein Ruhr, Essen; Kunstmuseum Bonn; and Taguchi Fine Art, Tokyo. He has shown at Bartha Contemporary, London, on several occasions, including solo presentations in 2007, 2014, and 2022. Group exhibitions have included presentations at the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn; Weserburg Museum für Moderne Kunst, Bremen; and Stavanger Art Museum, Norway, among others.
