Biography
Phil Sims was born in Richmond, USA, in 1940 and lives and works in Lakewood, USA. A member of the Radical Painting Group, his practice encompasses painting, ceramics, watercolour, and drawing, with a sustained focus on monochrome and colour-based abstraction. The inclusion of clay in his pigments gives his paintings a soft matte texture, allowing the viewer to experience the full intensity of colour. His work forms an important part of the Panza Collection, held at the Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza, Varese.
Sims has exhibited widely across the United States and Europe, with solo presentations at institutions including the Kunstmuseum Bonn, Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, Museum am Ostwall in Dortmund, Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich, and Malmö Konsthall. His work is held in numerous public collections, among them the Kolumba Kunstmuseum des Erzbistums Köln, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum in Hartford, the Musée d'Art Contemporain in Lyon, and the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown.
