WINSTON ROETH
May 23rd until July 1st
Gallery N. von Bartha is pleased to announce our first U.K. solo show of New York artist Winston Roeth. Running concurrently with an exhibition at the Gallery von Bartha in Basel, the London gallery will feature smaller grid paintings and 'containment paintings' - his own specific term for the monochromes with borders, that he has developed since his early pre-occupation with the form when studying at the Royal College of Art in London in the late sixties.
Working with raw pigment in a tempera medium, Roeth's paintings have a dense matt surface that draws the viewer into the intensity of the colour alone, inviting long contemplation of the shifting picture plane. Consequently his work has been described as exploring the phenomenology of colour itself. The critic Michael Brennan has described Roeth as '...probably the best colour painter in New York City.'
The catalogue accompanying the two exhibitions includes a specially written essay entitled 'Dry Liquid Edge of Experience' by Alison Green, curator and lecturer at St Martin's School of Art, London.
Winston Roeth has exhibited extensively in the United States, New Zealand, Japan and Europe. His work is in many private collections including a highly decorated C17th room devoted to his work, in the Palazzo Ducalle di Sassuolo, Italy.
