So, is it possible to think of an extreme greyness or to paint such a thing To examine a very narrow range of intermediate greys and make them newly visible, newly felt to expand them so far that internal subdivisions seem endless, as if they were the building blocks of space itself is an unusual thing to do. It is like discovering another visual pole or territory with no horizon lines or foreseeable limits, but whose infinite range of steps we may imagine through those that are visible here and now. Strangely, a decision to focus on limited intermediate tones allows the sense of a seemingly endless field. This mental space is the realm that James Howell's paintings define and occupy through their stated means of reducing opposition tonal subdivisions so subtle they skirt the limits of the perceptible. The subject of Series 10 is the gradation of a chromatic set of greys. Through repetition, movement and counting the passages of the work recall time. By pursuing ?Series 10? I have come to know reality not finally as a definite edge but as a range.
